Job Overview
The Curator of Collections Management will be primarily responsible for the comprehensive care, accurate documentation, and proactive preservation of the artistic, artifact, and cultural assets owned or managed by the university. This role sits at the intersection of academia and museum practice, supporting the educational and research mission of the university by ensuring collections are accessible and safeguarded for current and future generations.
Key Responsibilities and Duties
- Collections Management: Oversee all aspects of collections management, including inventory, registration, documentation, and the classification of items according to international professional standards.
- Conservation and Care: Develop and implement policies and procedures for preventive conservation, ensuring collections are stored and displayed in appropriate environmental conditions regarding climate, light, and security.
- Digitization and Archiving: Lead or contribute to projects aimed at digitizing collections to enhance access for researchers, students, and the public, while maintaining precise archival records.
- Academic and Research Support: Facilitate access to the collections for faculty, students, and visiting scholars to support scholarship and academic projects.
- Acquisitions and Loans: Assist in the process of acquiring new items and manage requests for loaning pieces to internal or external exhibitions, ensuring compliance with transport and insurance protocols.
- Compliance and Standards: Ensure all collections management practices comply with local and international regulations, professional ethics, and recognized museum best practices.
Qualifications and Requirements
- Educational Background: A Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field such as Museum Studies, Art History, Archaeology, Archival Science, or a similar discipline. A Master’s degree is preferred.
- Experience: Proven practical experience of 3-5 years in a similar role within a museum, cultural institution, archive, or academic setting, with a strong focus on collections management and conservation.
- Technical Knowledge: In-depth understanding of museum cataloging standards (such as Spectrum or a similar system), principles of preventive conservation, and collections security issues.
- Skills: Meticulous attention to detail, excellent organizational and documentation skills. The ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Technical Proficiency: Strong command of Microsoft Office suites and experience using specialized collections management database software (e.g., CollectiveAccess, PastPerfect, TMS).
- Language: Proficiency in written and spoken English is essential. Knowledge of the Arabic language is a significant advantage.
