Job Description and Key Responsibilities

The appointed Foreman will be placed within the newbuilding or repair division of the shipyard, directly supervising welding teams. The core responsibilities of this leadership role include:

  • Supervising daily welding operations (which may include SMAW, MIG/TIG, submerged arc welding, depending on specialization) to ensure quality, safety, and adherence to project schedules.
  • Reading and accurately interpreting engineering drawings, welding blueprints, and project specifications.
  • Planning and assigning tasks to welders and technicians within the team, ensuring optimal utilization of resources and materials.
  • Monitoring weld quality, conducting preliminary inspections, and ensuring strict compliance with international quality and safety standards (e.g., AWS, ASME).
  • Ensuring all team members comply with stringent safety procedures in a shipyard environment, including the proper use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
  • Providing technical training and guidance to junior welders to enhance team capability.
  • Coordinating with other department heads such as Engineering, Planning, and Procurement to ensure smooth workflow.

Qualifications and Essential Requirements

To be a successful candidate for this role, you must meet the following criteria:

  • Educational Qualification: A diploma in Mechanical Engineering, Welding Technology, or a related technical field. Formal qualifications may be substituted with extensive and proven practical experience.
  • Work Experience: Minimum of 8 to 10 years of experience in welding, with a proven track record of at least 3 to 5 years in a supervisory or leadership role (as Foreman) within the shipbuilding/ship repair or heavy steel fabrication industry.
  • Technical Skills:
    • Advanced proficiency in various welding techniques used in marine industries.
    • In-depth knowledge of international welding codes and specifications.
    • Ability to read and comprehend complex technical drawings.
    • Knowledge of metal types, properties, and treatment methods.
  • Personal Skills & Leadership Abilities:
    • Strong leadership and supervisory skills with the ability to motivate a team.
    • Excellent communication skills (verbal and written).
    • Ability to work under pressure and meet project deadlines.
