Instrument Technician (XRF/ICP/AAS Support) in Sohar, Oman

The company is seeking an Instrument Technician with hands-on experience in operating, maintaining, and supporting a range of advanced spectroscopic analysis equipment, specifically X-ray Fluorescence (XRF), Inductively Coupled Plasma (ICP), and Atomic Absorption Spectrometry (AAS) instruments.
Job Description and Key Responsibilities
The appointed technician will hold a pivotal role in ensuring the accuracy and reliability of laboratory analysis results, which are critical to the company's operational processes and quality assurance. Key responsibilities will include:
- Routine Operation and Maintenance: Performing daily or scheduled operation of XRF, ICP, and AAS instruments, conducting initial calibrations, visual inspections, and periodic cleaning of systems to ensure optimal performance.
- Troubleshooting and Repair: Diagnosing minor to moderately complex technical malfunctions in these instruments and resolving them proactively. Coordinating with equipment vendors and manufacturers for more complex issues.
- Technical User Support: Providing technical support and assistance to instrument operators and laboratory researchers to ensure the correct and safe use of equipment. Assisting in developing or modifying analysis protocols when required.
- Consumables Management: Monitoring levels of instrument-specific consumables, gases, and chemical reagents, ensuring their adequate availability, and preparing timely purchase requisitions.
- Compliance Assurance: Ensuring all processes adhere to established local and international laboratory safety protocols (such as ISO quality standards) and participating in internal audit processes.
- Documentation: Maintaining accurate records of all maintenance, repair, and calibration activities performed on the instruments and preparing periodic reports on equipment performance.
Qualifications and Essential Requirements
To be a successful candidate for this specialized technical role, you must meet the following criteria:
- Educational Qualification: A diploma or degree in Chemical Engineering, Electrical/Electronic Engineering, Chemistry, Physics, or any related technical science field. Candidates with a high school diploma may be considered provided they have extensive and proven direct hands-on experience in the same field.
- Work Experience: A minimum of 3 to 5 years of practical experience in operating and maintaining scientific instruments, with a strong and proven focus on direct hands-on experience with at least one of the XRF, ICP, or AAS technologies. Experience in an industrial setting (e.g., petrochemicals, metals, cement plants) is a significant advantage.
- Technical Skills:
- In-depth understanding of spectroscopic analysis principles.
- Ability to read electrical and hydraulic schematics of instruments.
- Excellent electronic and mechanical troubleshooting skills.
- Proficiency in using relevant computer software for instrument control and data processing.
- Personal Skills: Accuracy and attention to detail, ability to work independently and in a team, strong communication and documentation skills, and flexibility to work according to a schedule that may require prompt intervention to resolve issues.
