Job Overview
The Lead Environmental Engineer will assume a pivotal leadership role within the company's Environmental Affairs or Sustainability department. He/She will be responsible for leading and implementing environmental strategies and programs to ensure PDO's full operational compliance with local and international regulations, as well as the company's voluntary commitments to sustainability. This position operates in a dynamic environment where technical innovation meets environmental stewardship to ensure responsible and sustainable operations.
Key Expected Responsibilities and Duties
- Leadership & Strategic Planning: Lead and develop comprehensive environmental management plans and strategies for specific projects or operational areas.
- Compliance & Permits Management: Ensure full compliance with all Omani environmental laws and regulations (e.g., from the Ministry of Environment and Climate Affairs) and any adopted international standards. Manage the process for obtaining necessary environmental permits, approvals, and renewals.
- Impact Assessment & Monitoring: Oversee the conduct of Environmental Impact Assessments (EIA) for new projects and expansions. Design and implement environmental monitoring programs (for air, water, soil, waste) and analyze findings.
- Risk & Incident Management: Identify and assess environmental risks associated with operations and develop mitigation plans. Lead or support the response to, investigation of, and reporting on environmental incidents.
- Continuous Improvement & Reporting: Propose and implement initiatives to improve environmental performance, reduce carbon footprint, and enhance resource efficiency. Prepare periodic performance reports for senior management and stakeholders.
- Capability Building & Training: Mentor and train team members and junior engineers. Foster a culture of environmental awareness and responsibility among employees and contractors.
- Stakeholder Collaboration: Act as a key liaison with government regulatory bodies, contractors, and external consultants on all environmental matters.
Essential Qualifications and Requirements
- Educational Qualification: A Bachelor's degree in Environmental Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering with an environmental focus, or a related field. A Master's degree is a significant advantage.
- Work Experience: Minimum of 8 to 12 years of experience in environmental management, with a strong focus on the oil and gas sector or heavy industries. Experience must include a leadership or supervisory role.
- Technical Knowledge:
- In-depth knowledge of HSE (Health, Safety, and Environment) systems and procedures in oil & gas.
- Proficiency in Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) procedures, waste management (especially hazardous), and water treatment.
- Strong understanding of environmental management systems such as ISO 14001.
- Excellent data analysis skills and proficiency in relevant software.
- Personal Skills: Exceptional leadership and communication skills (verbal and written). Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and work under pressure. Strong complex problem-solving and decision-making abilities. Candidates must possess excellent teamwork and team leadership capabilities.
