
Tohoku University is a research-oriented institution located in Sendai, in the northeast region of Japan. Established in 1907 as Japan’s third National University, it was the first Japanese university to accept female students. TU has become one of Japan’s leading universities, with 10 faculties, 15 graduate schools, 3 professional graduate schools, 6 research institutes, and a university hospital. The number of students is approximately 18,000, including 2,200 international students (as of May 1, 2025). TU was approved as the first of Japan's "Universities for International Research Excellence" in December 2024, a new scheme where the government certifies and provides huge financial support. As the first recipient, TU aims to pioneer the future through excellence in research, talent development, and social co-creation.
