INCREASE CUSTOMER LOYALTY

The PMO is in the unique position of understanding the value that

projects bring to the customer. It can also suggest that project goals

be modified to align with a customer’s strategic direction. If the project

objective is to install software to reduce and contain costs for the

organization, the true benefit might be to provide a platform that not

only reduces costs but also allows for significant growth. Due to the

speed and efficiency that the project results provide when compared

to a competitor, this encourages new customers and new customer

segments. In a fast-paced competitive landscape, strategic alignment

to an organization’s direction is critical in providing project value. The

PMO can validate the business objectives and ensure that they are of

strategic value and wrapped inside a good business case. Delivering

the project scope on time and within budget brings increased

credibility for the project processes and will enhance customer

confidence in both the organization and the PMO.

EXPAND PROJECT CAPABILITY

To use AI tools for expanding project capability to new areas, one

critical element will be access to data from similar projects. It may not

be adequate to use existing project data when attempting to utilize AI

tools on projects that are normally beyond an organization’s capability.

The strategy will be to acquire data from outside the organization and

it is unlikely that competitors will provide the data, although it might be

worthwhile to collaborate in some way. For taking incremental steps

into new capability, an organization can evaluate how much data is

available for the AI tools. Having developed a significant base of

compiled data that is used to improve project decisions, the

organization can proceed with projects that are outside their normal

range of capability. For example, a construction company that

specializes in small buildings can seek to tackle larger and more

complex structures. A software deployment contractor that performs

configuration and installation for a single entity can expand to seek

deployment opportunities across multiple branches or geographically

diverse organizations.

Successful use of AI technology offers the ability to expand

project capability in size and complexity and into totally unique areas.

Of course, a business that completes projects for hardware

development will not suddenly become capable of implementing

global financial processes. However, as an organization grows or

changes direction, the ability to successfully implement new projects is

greater when using AI tools and especially when collecting larger

volumes of project data. Some project decisions may in fact be more

generic than specific, especially in areas such as risk, resources, or

budget. A prerequisite to expanding project capability is consistently

high success rates for existing projects, which is achievable by using

AI tools in the project methodology.

when an organization is bidding to win project work, and AI tools can

improve the success of this process.

executed. The PMO has the opportunity to find new ways to reduce

costs, improve schedules, optimize resource utilization, increase

customer loyalty, expand the organization’s project capability, and

implement lean processes. The PMO is the owner of project metrics,

the key performance indicators (KPIs) of project success, and these

are needed to benchmark the existing process against the changes

when AI tools are implemented. There are numerous possibilities to

improve the bottom line, and the PMO can build the business case to

do this. The PMO can also focus on solving the pain that the current

organization feels as projects go awry. The PMO is the clear leader in

the change process to update the project methodology so that project

success and bottom-line improvements become a consistent

expectation and an enjoyable reality
