Job Description and Key Responsibilities
A Marine Pilot holds a critical position in ensuring the safety and efficiency of maritime operations. The successful candidate will be responsible for safely navigating commercial vessels through complex waterways, port approaches, and within the harbor confines of Omani ports. Core duties include:
- Safe Ship Guidance: Directing vessels to and from their berths safely, considering weather conditions, maritime traffic, water depth, and potential obstacles.
- Navigation Planning: Developing detailed passage plans prior to each pilotage operation, utilizing up-to-date nautical charts, GPS systems, and tidal information.
- Effective Communication: Maintaining clear and constant radio communication with ship captains, port Vessel Traffic Service (VTS) operators, and tugboat crews to ensure seamless coordination.
- Regulatory Compliance: Ensuring full compliance with local and international maritime laws and regulations, safety codes, and environmental protocols specific to Oman.
- Emergency Management: Possessing the ability to make swift, sound decisions during emergencies or unexpected conditions to safeguard the vessel, crew, and environment.
- Documentation: Preparing accurate reports on pilotage operations and any incidents or noteworthy observations.
Essential Requirements and Qualifications
ACE Management is seeking highly qualified candidates with proven practical experience. The essential requirements include:
- Certifications: Applicants must hold a valid Master Mariner certificate or equivalent, along with a recognized Pilotage License. Certifications issued under the international STCW convention are highly preferred.
- Experience: A minimum of 5 years of proven experience in pilotage operations for large commercial vessels (such as oil tankers, container ships, or gas carriers). Previous experience in Gulf ports or similar navigational environments is a significant advantage.
- Technical Skills: Deep proficiency in electronic navigation systems (ECDIS, Radar, GPS), and an excellent understanding of hydrography and meteorology.
- Personal Skills: Exceptional decision-making ability under pressure, excellent communication and negotiation skills, high situational awareness, and strong team leadership.
- Medical Fitness: Candidates must meet the medical fitness standards required for seafaring duties.
- Language: Fluency in written and spoken English is mandatory, as it is the primary language of international maritime communication. Knowledge of Arabic will be an additional asset.
Work Location and Environment
The position will be based in the Sultanate of Oman, operating from one of Oman's vital ports. A Marine Pilot works in a dynamic and challenging environment that requires constant vigilance and adaptability to irregular shift patterns and changing weather conditions.
