Job Description

The Medical Underwriter will be placed within the underwriting department, responsible for analyzing and assessing risks associated with individual and group health insurance proposals. Key Expected Responsibilities:

• Assess new (initial) and renewal health insurance applications by analyzing applicants' medical history and other health data.
• Apply underwriting guidelines and internal company policies to determine risk levels and make informed decisions regarding acceptance, rejection, or modification of coverage terms.
• Calculate appropriate insurance premiums based on accurate risk assessment, ensuring market competitiveness and company profitability.
• Work closely with the sales and customer service teams to clarify underwriting decisions and provide necessary explanations.
• Review and update underwriting manuals, policies, and procedures in line with industry best practices and regulatory requirements in the UAE.
• Stay updated on medical developments, disease trends, and changes in local health insurance regulations.
• Prepare periodic reports and analyses on the performance of the health insurance portfolio and claims patterns.

Requirements and Qualifications

NATIONAL GENERAL INSURANCE CO is seeking candidates with proven experience and deep knowledge in the health insurance field.

Educational Qualifications:

• A Bachelor's degree in Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, or any related field in health sciences. Other qualifications such as Business Administration or Finance may be considered with strong medical underwriting experience.
• Recognized professional certifications in insurance or underwriting (e.g., CII, ALU, or equivalents) are a significant advantage.

Required Experience:

• Minimum 3 to 5 years of practical experience in Medical Underwriting within insurance companies or Third-Party Administrators (TPAs) in the Gulf region, preferably with experience in the UAE market.
• In-depth understanding of the health insurance systems in the UAE, including regulations from relevant authorities (e.g., Dubai Health Authority, Department of Health Abu Dhabi).
• Strong knowledge of common diseases, treatments, and healthcare costs.

Personal and Professional Skills:

• Excellent analytical and deductive skills with the ability to interpret complex medical data.
• High attention to detail and accuracy in work.
• Effective written and verbal communication skills in both Arabic and English.
• Ability to work under pressure and make decisions within set deadlines.
• Integrity and strict confidentiality when handling sensitive medical information.
• Proficiency in computer use, Microsoft Office applications, and insurance policy management systems.
