Job Description and Key Responsibilities

The appointed Protection Engineer will be integrated into the energy or relevant project teams, bearing responsibility for the technical aspects of electrical protection systems. The core responsibilities for this role are expected to include:

• Protection System Design & Review: Designing and reviewing protection schemes and systems for substations, generation plants, and power transmission & distribution projects.
• Technical Specification Preparation: Preparing and refining technical specifications for protection relays, meters, and related control equipment.
• Conducting Studies & Calculations: Performing protection coordination studies, short-circuit calculations, and relay setting calculations using specialized software such as ETAP, CAPE, or equivalents.
• Project Phase Support: Providing technical support across all project phases, from basic design through procurement, installation, testing, and commissioning.
• Client & Contractor Coordination: Working closely with clients, contractors, and vendors to ensure protection systems comply with requirements, international standards (e.g., IEC, IEEE), and local regulations.
• Document & Drawing Review: Reviewing and approving documents and drawings submitted by contractors or internal teams.
• Troubleshooting: Investigating operational faults related to protection systems and proposing effective solutions.
• Quality & Compliance Assurance: Ensuring adherence to applicable company and industry quality and safety standards.

Qualifications and Essential Requirements

To qualify for this role, you should meet the following criteria:

• Educational Background: A Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering (Power/Energy specialization) from a recognized university. A Master's degree will be considered an advantage.
• Work Experience: A minimum of 5 to 8 years of practical experience in power system protection engineering, with proven experience in the design and study of protection systems for major projects.
• Technical Knowledge:
  • In-depth knowledge of protection principles and systems for substations, generators, transformers, and transmission lines.
  • Proficiency in using power system simulation and study software (e.g., ETAP, PSS/E, CDEGS).
  • Comprehensive understanding of relevant international standards (IEC 61850, IEEE).
  • Knowledge of Substation Automation & Control Systems (SCADA) will be a significant advantage.
• Soft Skills: Excellent communication and interpersonal skills (verbal and written), with the ability to work within a team and in a multicultural environment. The ideal candidate should possess strong time-management skills and the ability to handle multiple tasks concurrently.
• Language: Fluency in English, both written and spoken, is essential. Knowledge of Arabic is an additional asset in the Omani job market.
