The National Institute of Technology (NIT), Tiruchirappalli, established in 1964 as the Regional Engineering College (REC) Tiruchirappalli, was founded through a collaboration between the Government of India and the Government of Tamil Nadu under the affiliation of the University of Madras. In 2003, the institute was granted deemed university status with the approval of the University Grants Commission (UGC), the All-India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), and the Government of India. In the same year, it was designated as a National Institute of Technology (NIT), joining the esteemed group of 31 NITs across the country. Recognized as an Institute of National Importance under the National Institutes of Technology, Science Education and Research (NITSER) Act, 2007, NIT Tiruchirappalli operates within the NIT system—centrally funded technical institutes (CFTIs) governed by the Council of NITSER. The institute receives funding from the Ministry of Education (MoE), Government of India, and specializes in Engineering, Management, Science, Technology, Education, and Architecture. NIT Tiruchirappalli offers a comprehensive range of academic programs, including 10 undergraduates (B.Tech./B.Arch.), 31 postgraduate (M.Tech./M.Sc./MBA/MCA), and 17 doctoral programs across 17 academic departments, conferring over 2,000 degrees annually. As part of the National Education Policy (NEP 2020) implementation, the institute has introduced the Integrated Teacher Education Programme (ITEP), offering three B.Sc.–B.Ed. programmes, designed to nurture high-quality teachers with strong foundations in science, technology, and pedagogy.
