Overview

Based across three separate campuses in Temuco, Talca and Santiago, the Universidad Autónoma de Chile is home to approximately 22,000 students. A private university, the institution offers both undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, as well as diploma courses and doctoral studies. Teaching at the university is split across seven different faculties: Health Sciences; Architecture and Construction; Business and Administration; Social Sciences and Humanities; Law; Education; and Engineering. The university also has 11 different research centers, including the Chilean Institute of Municipal Studies (ICHIEM). Temuco, where the university was initially founded, is a city in southern Chile. Historically, the university has been a hub for tourism, agriculture, livestock and forestry, due to its location close to the Andean valleys, lakes and the coast. Today, a significant proportion of the city has Basque ancestry, while another distinctive feature is the presence of indigenous Mapuche residents.
