About this Course

Most countries have experienced growing diversities in recent decades as a result of migration as well as historical minorities. All school levels are facing complex challenges as well as opportunities in responding to growing diversities. In this context, many teachers claim that they lack training and high burnout rates are reported among teachers (OECD, 2018). This course, Sustainable Global Citizenship Education addresses the needs for knowledge and training for teachers working in diverse multilingual contexts. The aims of this course are to develop competencies with respect to diversity in multilingual and multicultural contexts; to develop understanding of digital responsibility and the development of responsible digital behaviour in relation to the aforementioned; and to develop an understanding of global citizenship education. The aims of module 1 are to introduce the main concepts addressed in the course. The aims of modules 2 and 3 are 1) To enhance teachers’ intercultural and linguistic sensitivity, their agency and their ability to adopt a linguistically and culturally responsive teaching methodology. 2) To increase students’ awareness of (i) the wealth of human languages and the value of language learning and (ii) cultural diversity in order to help them develop skills and knowledge leading to plurilingual and intercultural competence. 3) To develop teachers’ and students’ metalinguistic and cross-linguistic awareness as means to achieving a positive attitude towards language learning and improve their academic achievements in this area. The aims of modules 4 and 5 are: 1) To increase awareness and understanding of global citizenship in the digital world. 2) To empower educators' identity for the global digital world. 3) Analyse memorable learning experiences in a globalised world.
