Grant Funding Sources

University of Alaska Fairbanks

This course addresses one of the most often-asked questions: “Who do I ask, and how can I find them?” We will take a look at the type of grant proposal you have created and then search for the appropriate resources to cover the expenses. This covers initial searches, creating a list of prospective funders, knowing how to prioritize who to ask and how much to ask for, as well as what you can do if you are rejected & strategizing next steps, even when successful in securing funds.

About this Course

Many grant seekers leave out the first step in asking for funds to complete a project. You have to have a plan before you search for support. That is true at the local level with individual donors as well as with national foundations, and everything in between. Funders will often trust you know what you’re doing with programming and that you know how to get things accomplished. They are more interested in the positive impacts that your project will have with their support. Funders purchase outcomes. Selling the fact that your organization is the one who can delivery those outcomes means you have to have a proposal that matches the desired outcomes you are trying to create.

What You'll Learn

  • Selectively search for funders that match your type of proposal;
  • Evaluate potential funders to determine partnership compatibility/suitability;
  • Make the short list of prospects
  • Strategize beginning a relationship with prospects, improving chances of success
  • Accept rejection – what to do, questions to ask, how to use feedback
  • Strategize what next in the relationships with funders into the future.
