The Universidade Federal de Pernambuco was founded in 1946, in Recife, capital of the State of Pernambuco (UFPE). It is one of the best universities in the country in teaching (undergraduate and post graduate) and scientific research, and it is the best in the North-Northeast region, according to evaluations of the Ministries of Education (MEC) and Science and Technology (MCT). In recent years, with support from the Federal Government, UFPE expanded its operations - building two campuses in the interior of the state, in the cities of Vitória de Santo Antão and Caruaru - and created new courses in response to economic and social demands, such as Cinema, Archaeology, Museology, Dance, Information Systems, Materials Engineering, Energy Engineering and Naval Engineering.
