Drilling Supervisor / Wellsite Supervisor at Petroleum Development Oman (PDO)
Petroleum Development Oman (PDO) is the cornerstone of the oil and gas sector in the Sultanate, accounting for the majority of the country's crude oil production and natural gas supply. Job Description and Key Responsibilities
The Drilling/Wellsite Supervisor will be the primary field authority for all drilling operations at the wellsite. He/She is responsible for ensuring operations are executed to the highest standards of safety, efficiency, and compliance with technical specifications and established protocols. Key responsibilities include:
- Direct Supervision: Oversee all drilling and completion activities on the wellsite, including the work of the drilling crew and contracted service personnel.
- Safety First: Ensure full compliance with all site safety (e.g., HSE) policies and procedures. Lead daily safety meetings (e.g., toolbox talks) and investigate any incidents or near misses.
- Operations Control: Monitor drilling parameters and provide immediate reporting of any deviations from the plan. Make field operational decisions to troubleshoot issues and mitigate risks.
- Quality Assurance: Ensure all work is performed according to approved well designs and company specifications. Conduct routine inspections of equipment and operations.
- Data & Reporting Management: Maintain accurate and detailed records of drilling operations (drilling logs). Prepare and submit daily tour reports to the town-based drilling engineering team.
- Coordination & Communication: Act as the key liaison between the wellsite and town-based drilling engineers, service contractors, and other relevant departments.
- Materials Management: Supervise the receipt, storage, and usage of all materials and equipment on the wellsite.
- Training & Development: Mentor and train less experienced drilling crew members to ensure skill and competency development.
Qualifications and Essential Requirements
To qualify for this critical role, you must meet the following criteria:
- Educational Qualification: A Bachelor's degree in Engineering (preferably Petroleum, Mechanical, or Chemical) or a Higher Diploma in a relevant discipline from a recognized institution. Extensive practical experience may be considered in lieu of formal education in some cases.
- Work Experience: A minimum of 8 to 12 years of hands-on experience in oil and gas well drilling, with a proven track record of at least 4 to 6 years in a Wellsite Supervisor role or equivalent.
- Professional Certifications: A valid IWCF (International Well Control Forum) or equivalent Well Control certification at the Supervisor Level. In-depth knowledge of Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) standards and procedures in the oil and gas industry.
- Technical Skills: Comprehensive understanding of drilling techniques and equipment, fluid systems, and well cementing operations. Ability to read and interpret well schematics and engineering designs.
- Personal Skills: Strong leadership and supervisory skills. Excellent problem-solving and decision-making abilities under pressure. Effective communication skills (verbal and written) in English; Arabic is a significant advantage. Ability to work on a rotational shift pattern (typically 28 days on / 28 days off) in remote locations.
Work Environment and Location
The successful candidate will be based at active PDO drilling sites located across various regions of the Sultanate of Oman. The role requires shift work in a potentially challenging industrial and remote environment, with a strict adherence to rigorous safety protocols.
