Job Description and Key Responsibilities

The AS400 Developer will hold a pivotal role within the development team, responsible for the full lifecycle of business applications on the IBM i platform. Core responsibilities include:

• Development & Maintenance: Designing, coding, testing, and implementing new applications using core AS400 languages such as RPG (IV, ILE, and Free-Format) and CL (Control Language).
• Database Management: Developing, querying, and maintaining database structures on the system using DB2 for i, including table design, view creation, and writing stored procedures.
• Systems Analysis: Working closely with business analysts and end-users to understand requirements and translate them into technical specifications and effective software solutions.
• Troubleshooting: Diagnosing and resolving technical issues within existing applications, ensuring optimal performance and system stability.
• Integration: Developing interfaces to integrate the AS400 system with other systems within the company's infrastructure.
• Documentation: Preparing and updating technical and user documentation for developed applications and procedures.
• Support: Providing level 2/3 technical support for operational applications and ensuring business continuity.

Qualifications and Core Requirements

To be a successful candidate for this role, you should meet the following criteria:

• Practical Experience: Proven experience of 3 to 5 years in AS400 (IBM i) application development within an enterprise environment.
• Advanced Technical Skills:
  • Strong proficiency in RPG programming languages in all forms (RPG III, RPG IV, RPG ILE, Free-Format RPG).
  • Hands-on experience writing CL (Control Language) scripts for task automation and job management.
  • In-depth knowledge of DB2 for i database management, including SQL.
  • Solid understanding of AS400 system architecture and concepts such as Libraries, Objects, and Authorities.
• Personal Skills: Excellent problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, the capacity to work effectively in a team, and strong communication skills.
• Preferred Qualifications: Any experience with modern IBM i development tools (like Rational Developer for i), an understanding of Agile development methodologies, or knowledge of web technologies for interfacing with AS400 would be a strong added advantage.
