Job Description and Key Responsibilities

The successful Registered Nurse will be a vital member of the ophthalmic operating theatre team, responsible for delivering specialized, safe, and efficient nursing care throughout the perioperative process. Key duties and responsibilities include:

  • Pre-Operative Preparation: Meticulous preparation of the ophthalmic operating theatre, ensuring all specialized surgical instruments and equipment (such as surgical microscopes, laser systems, and aspiration units) are sterilized, functional, and available according to established protocols.
  • Intra-Operative Assistance: Providing effective surgical assistance to the ophthalmologist and anesthesia team during various ophthalmic procedures, including cataract surgery, glaucoma surgery, laser vision correction, and corneal transplants. This involves anticipating the surgeon's needs, passing instruments with precision, and maintaining a sterile field.
  • Patient Care: Continuously monitoring the patient's vital signs during anesthesia and surgery, and accurately documenting all observations and procedures in the patient's record.
  • Safety and Asepsis: Strict adherence to infection control policies and sterilization protocols to ensure the highest levels of safety for both patients and staff.
  • Inventory Management: Assisting in monitoring stock levels of ophthalmic-specific medical consumables and initiating supply requests as needed to prevent operational disruptions.
  • Team Collaboration: Working effectively and collaboratively with ophthalmologists, anesthetists, anesthesia technicians, fellow nurses, and other healthcare professionals to deliver integrated care.

Job Requirements and Qualifications

To be eligible for this specialized role, candidates must meet the following criteria:

  • Educational Qualification: A Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) or a recognized Nursing Diploma.
  • Licensing: Must possess a valid Registered Nurse license from the UAE Ministry of Health and Prevention (MOHAP) or be eligible to obtain it. Previous licensing from other Gulf countries is preferred.
  • Experience: Proven work experience of at least 2-3 years as a Registered Nurse specifically within an Ophthalmic Operating Theatre (OT Optha). Experience in private hospitals or specialized eye care centers is a significant advantage.
  • Technical Skills: Practical knowledge of operating and maintaining specialized ophthalmic surgical equipment.
  • Soft Skills: Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, the ability to work calmly under pressure in a fast-paced environment, strong attention to detail, and a firm commitment to nursing ethics.
  • Language: Proficiency in English for both written and verbal communication is essential. Knowledge of Arabic is an additional advantage.
