Design Engineer - Overhead Transmission Lines (OHL) in Dubai

Job Description & Key Responsibilities

The appointed engineer will be responsible for the design and technical aspects of overhead transmission line projects. Key duties include:

• Design & Engineering: Preparing and developing detailed design drawings and engineering plans (structural & electrical) for high and medium-voltage overhead transmission lines. This includes tower/pole design, foundation design, conductor configuration, and sag-tension calculations.
• Technical Studies: Conducting necessary technical studies and analyses such as load capacity studies, wind load analysis, electromagnetic compatibility studies, and risk assessments.
• Standards Compliance: Ensuring all designs comply with local specifications (e.g., Dubai Electricity and Water Authority - DEWA) and international standards (e.g., IEC, IEEE, BS), as well as required safety and quality standards.
• Project Support: Working closely with project managers, other engineers, and site technicians to provide technical support throughout the design and implementation phases.
• Design Review: Reviewing and checking designs submitted by contractors or consultants to ensure accuracy and compliance with project requirements.
• Reporting: Preparing technical reports, specification documents, and tender documentation related to design.

Qualifications & Essential Requirements

To qualify for this role, you must meet the following criteria:

• Educational Background: A Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or Civil Engineering (with a focus on structures) from an accredited university. A Master's degree will be an added advantage.
• Experience: Minimum 5 to 8 years of practical experience in Overhead Transmission Line (OHL) design. Experience should include working on projects within the utilities (power) sector or with leading engineering consultancy firms.
• Technical Skills:
  • Strong proficiency in relevant engineering design and analysis software (e.g., PLS-CADD, PLS-POLE, AutoCAD, MicroStation).
  • In-depth knowledge of local and international OHL design standards.
  • Comprehensive understanding of OHL system components (towers, conductors, insulators, protection devices).
• Soft Skills: Excellent communication skills (written and verbal), ability to work in a team, attention to detail and accuracy, and strong problem-solving abilities.
• Language: Proficiency in written and spoken English is essential. Knowledge of Arabic is a distinct advantage.
